Programme
Delivering recommendations to a new climate treaty
COPENHAGEN 24-26 MAY 2009
At the World Business Summit on Climate Change, CEOs of global companies will come together with prominent scientists and other key stakeholders to engage in real dialogue and constructive working sessions to seek solutions to the climate challenge.
Participants in the Summit will assess what a post-Kyoto agreement on climate change might look like from a business perspective. Building on the work done by pioneering companies and business-led initiatives on climate change, participants will define the key principles to underpin global action on climate change, including a comprehensive catalogue of solutions, recommendations and actions to inform and inspire the world’s political leaders to agree on a new international framework. Participants in the Summit will consider which specific provisions the business community need to be inscribed in the next international climate treaty to facilitate and strengthen their contribution to promoting low carbon economic growth, i.e. how the treaty can support business action on climate change.
On the final day of the summit, participants will come together to discuss, prioritize and decide on overall strategies and policies. The results of the Summit will be presented to the Danish Government, host of the UN Climate Change Conference in 2009, and to world leaders negotiating the terms of the next international climate treaty.
In collaboration with the Danish government, the Summit will also convene Copenhagen Business PrepCom, an exclusive CEO roundtable for select business leaders and key negotiators to provide a business perspective to COP15 and to help shape the post-2012 policy framework.
PROGRAMME THEMES
The programme will be designed to address the overall political framework as well as the following key business issues:
Implementing low carbon solution: defining opportunities and barriers
Participants will look past COP15 at realizing opportunities to significantly lower global emissions. Based on an analysis of what is possible over what timeframe and at what cost, participants will point to the most significant obstacles to the implementation of existing low carbon solutions and how they may be overcome.
Low carbon competitiveness
Based on a report benchmarking the degree of readiness of countries to participate in and benefit from a low carbon transformation, this track will explore the relevant strategies and partnerships necessary to achieve sustained progress towards a competitive, dynamic low carbon economy.
Business strategies on climate change
Highlighting best practices of green pioneers, this track will examine how the most successful companies are developing and implementing strategies that address climate-related risks and opportunities. The discussions will be based on the findings of a survey of the signatories of the UN Global Compact’s “Caring for Climate” statement and on the best practices of pioneering companies.
SUMMIT EXPERIENCE
Designed to ensure a high level of interaction and engagement, the program will include several keynotes as well as large- and small-group discussions, roundtables, interviews, and tutorials. On the final day of the summit, participants will come together to discuss, prioritize and decide on overall strategies and policies.
